‘HAVE YOU ALWAYS PAINTED?’

Yes, furniture, fabric, lamps, walls, floors, ceilings, skirtings!

I was painting tired old brown furniture long before it became a thing, and painting interiors since before I can remember, but

‘paintin’ what like proper paintin’?’

I’ve done that for a long time, too but only for myself and without much direction. Something I’ve always loved but deemed my work not good enough to show others.

Hmm, ‘not good enough’ now that’s a whole other theme for a whole other story…

As the years and various creative roles have passed, I finally find myself in front of the canvas. I like it here, the process is meditative and joyful and challenging and frustrating and then joyful again.

Grounded in my space where the paint-splattered handle of the brush feels homely in my hand, and bright pots of paint and curiosities are supported by my huge DIY desk, there’s comfort and a warming sense of nostalgia akin to lifting the lid off  Grandma’s old button box. The muted white walls allow the work in progress to breathe.

Do I think my art is good enough now? Honestly, not all of it, but that’s not the point. Would I like to sell some pieces? Of course, but what really matters is I show up, I continue to push paint around for the love of it and notice how it makes me feel.

This is a studio, I’m not an artist, I paint, I guess that makes me a painter and in answer to the question…

Yes, I’ve been painting for a very long time!

With love,
