October has been giving sunshine and showers, falling leaves and the final flurry of sweet peas. Said sweet peas took a while to establish as the local rabbit and her pals nibbled at the fresh new shoots. I built a little defence of twigs, a wooden turret around the struggling stems. In time the pale green shoots strengthened producing a blooming bounty of the delicious scented blooms, in all shades from pale pink to luscious lilac to bold burgundy.
When the first petals began to form I watched intently and then the perfect sweet pea popped open, it made my heart so happy, the determination to direct the rabbits to another grazing site had paid off and I can’t tell you the joy I got from that one bloom. Here we are mid October and they’re still faithfully flowering. I love to cut and gift to family and friends, such little flowers full of shape, scent and superb sharers of wonder.
