‘LET’S DO IT!’

In a moment of madness and singing ‘Let’s do it, let’s do it’ with an affectionate nod to the wonderful Victoria Wood song we struggled into our wetsuits, jumped into the car and headed to Coniston.

After much hilarity and looking not much like streamline athletes but more like cartoon characters, we clumsily slithered into the freezing water, those rocks are heckish slippery. The icy trickles soon seeped into our suits and after a few shivery gasps and indelicate expletives, we began to submerge ourselves. 

The healing qualities of water are wonderful and slowly and with each stroke we became more like the streamline athletes and less like the cartoon characters. The sensation of the water sliding past our bodies was truly magical and our target of reaching the ‘sticky out rock’ was soon achieved. We stopped to tread water for a couple of moments whilst taking in the beautiful view. No sun today, but the cloud formation and the dramatic silhouetted fells were equally rewarding.

As we doubled back we were witness to a fish leaping high out of the water ! He was obviously enjoying it as much as we were!

On dry land, the challenge of removing the suit was probably more difficult than the swim, as the cartoon characters had returned and we once again became weak with laughter. Eventually we donned our dry clothes. Sadly our mini thermos was somewhat lacking, so we drove off in search of more fulfilling hot drinks. By this time my body was in the ‘teeth chattering and knees knocking state’! Feeling uncomfortable I remembered I could meditate on this, I concentrated on getting warmer and soon my body began to relax, my hot drink arrived and the combination of the two helped my body temperature return to normal. The power of meditation never fails to amaze me.

Back home and reflecting on our swim, it’s made me realise that when you’re deliberating, tell yourself to …”JUST DO IT’ you will seldom be disappointed
