R.I.P. MABEL
This last week has been an extremely sad time in our lives, our dear, darling, mischievous Mabel has passed away. It’s impossible to describe the life of a dog in a few sentences, but I hope you get the feeling of the wonderful pet that has enriched our life over the last 11 and a half years. The little furry bundle of Jack Russell joy was a surprise gift for Charlie’s 9th birthday. Little did we know then that she would turn into the most loyal, hilarious and fabulous dog. Mabel was full of personality, she ‘owned’ everywhere we walked and was never shy to grumble at other dogs or a passerby with a hood on!!! We lost her several times but always knew she’d eventually follow us or we would find her furiously digging for moles, paws and mouth, literally full of soil. Mr Mole was very elusive, but that didn’t stop her trying.
At home, she chewed empty wrappers, pinched tissues, napkins, and even the cardboard from inside the toilet rolls. She’d trot through the house until we caught her and said, ‘That’s not yours,’ with a guilty look and in slow motion, she’d slowly release said item. She was partial to a bit of tea…or coffee… or milk and thought nothing of jumping onto the coffee table to finish off your brew!
She absolutely adored her extended family and our friends, but if she thought anyone was stepping out of line, she’d tell them. She was the perfect guard dog, though she was little, she was fierce. Despite displaying true terrier tendencies, during my illness, she showed real empathy and at my worst times, in bed or on the sofa curled up, she would lie nestled behind my knees, as if to say, it’s ok, I’m here for you.
She relished being stroked and would cheekily nudge you if you got distracted from your duty. She loved us all, and we loved her. So for every time without fail she greeted us at the door, for every time she made us laugh till we cried, for every time we made up a new name for her, for every time she brought us comfort in sadness, for every time we walked in all weathers, for every time she dug for moles and taught us patience, for every time she gave us joy and expected nothing in return, for every time during change she was our constant, we truly, truly say …thank you. To us, she really was ‘the best dog in the world’
RIP, dear darling mischievous Mabel
With love,
