MOVING FORWARD NOT STEPPING BACK
After I returned from my year in Australia some 27 years ago, I remember chatting to my friend’s Dad. He asked me what I was going to do now. ‘I’m not sure, I just know I want to be in charge of my own time. I thought that was a perfectly normal thing to say. Charlie, then in his seventies, thought it was marvellous; he hadn’t heard anyone say that before.
Although this didn’t happen straight away, I did become self-employed years later. Although I worked super hard and many, many hours, it did eventually allow me the gift of being in charge of my own time.
So now, today, in my meditation business, I work the days and times that are helpful to me. However, it struck me that with the demands of social media, emails and the internet, the self-employed working day can be 24 hours, 7 days per week … if you let it.
So I’m taking charge again, I’m going to try to keep Friday -Sunday a technology free zone. I am not going to feel pressure to answer emails straight away or be drawn into Facebook stories.
Instagram will be my exception, because actually I love taking and sharing photos.
Days off will be days off. I believe we should be in the moment, face-to-face. I’m connecting to how we used to spend time, and I see it as moving forward, not stepping back.
Wish me luck.
With love,
